My name is Phengheng Khorn, and I’m an international student from Cambodia currently studying in Ireland. I have a background in education, with a strong focus on English language teaching and digital integration in education. I am pursuing a Master’s in Education in Digital Leadership at Mary Immaculate College.
Prior to coming to Ireland, I worked as a lecturer of English at the Department of English, Institute of Foreign Languages, where I taught students Advanced English, Literature Studies, and Critical Thinking. My role involved in designing course materials and engaging students in learning, primarily through technology-enhanced methods. Besides teaching, I also took part in many research projects to provide insight into modernising Cambodia’s education system.
The Ireland Fellows Programme has offered me exposure to diverse cultures in Ireland, access to quality resources, and the opportunity to learn from top educators and researchers in the field of digital education. It has broadened my understanding of international educational practices and strengthened my skills in digital education.
In the course of my fellowship, I chose to study Digital Leadership in Education because of my strong interest in improving digital inclusion and integrating meaningful technology in education. I want to develop the skills and insights needed to lead, innovate, and support students' learning in the 21st Century.
I have gained significant insights into Universal Design for Learning, digital inclusion, and systematic literature review. Additionally, I’ve learned about digital tools that can support student engagement and equity in blended learning environments.
Adjusting to life in Ireland has been a learning experience. Although I miss some aspects of Cambodian culture, I enjoy the friendly Irish community and the learning environment here. The weather and lifestyle are quite different, but I’m gradually adapting. I believe I share similar answers to many others. The biggest difference is the weather! Coming from the tropical climate of Cambodia, the Irish weather was a bit of a surprise. It's constantly changing, and the rain is a constant companion. But I get used to it, and something is charming about the ever-changing skies.
During this fellowship, I hope to deepen my expertise in digital leadership and develop a practical action plan to support students in my home country. I want to make learning more inclusive and accessible for all students.
My favourite part has been the opportunity to engage with peers and professors who share similar passions for educational technology. Learning from their perspectives has been invaluable, and I’ve enjoyed the cultural exchange experiences. Absolutely. This programme provides invaluable academic, cultural, and professional experiences that are crucial for personal growth and career development. It also allows them to develop a global perspective, which is essential in today’s interconnected world.
